Apple Crumble Recipe...
My apple crumble recipe originally came from this website:
http://www.cookuk.co.uk/cake/apple-crumble-recipe.htmBut I found that the pastry dough was too wet to make the crumble so I just kept adding ingredients in and this is the end result:
Ingredients: 4~5 green apples
(I used 4 that time so maybe 5 more sour? Increase fine sugar as needed.) 100g or 80g butter
(depending how big your dish is and how thick the crumble pastry layer you want to eat.)200g self-raising* flour
90g granulated sugar
60g fine sugar
(It's fine if you only have one type of sugar. Proportions are variable to taste.)
Cinnammon or almond flakes optional
Steps: 1) Mix the butter, flour and granulated sugar in a dry bowl to get crumbs.
2) Set oven to 180°C/Gas mark 5 to pre-heat it while preparing apples.
3) Peel and core apples. Cube or slice the pieces.
4) Spread apple cubes/slices in oven-proof dish.
5) Spread 60g fine sugar (then sprinkle cinnammon) over apples
6) Spread crumble mixture on top.
7) Bake at 180°C for 50 min at spread heat.
(cuz at 40min the apples were too hard. but too long and they get mushy...)
8) Drain apple juice carefully.
(This is where I get apple juice coming out. Don't have to drain if yours is not abnormal like mine. P.S. Apple juice makes a nice drink after adding more water so don't throw it away.)
9) Put the apple crumble under a hot grill for about 30 to 45 seconds to 'brown' the crumble topping.
Keep an eye on it since it can turn black very quickly. 10) Leave it to cool as the apple filling can stay hot for a long time. *Serve warm or with vanilla ice-cream on the side.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can actually smell if the pastry is getting too sweet or too floury while you mix the dough. My oven allows me to select for middle, top or bottom heat so I just turn to top heat to brown the crust. The heating elements only turn red at top heat and not at middle, that's why.
